…and She Can Sing, Too?!

It is a long-standing tradition in Hollywood for creative types and performers to dabble in working in different mediums than they are commonly known for and it seems to me that over the past couple of decades the lines between singers, dancers, actors, writers, etc., have become more blurred than ever. Country superstar Tim McGraw played a main character in one of the most nominated films at the 2009 Oscars, “The Blind Side,” the cast of the television series “Glee” have had more number one singles than Elvis, and there are tons of artists out there, like Jennifer Lopez, who seamlessly travel from being an accomplished actress to being a full-fledged pop diva to judging a reality television series. It seems that these days, there is no need for such lines and so many performers are finding success across several different platforms. It is definitely a fascinating time in pop culture. I was thinking about this recently when I heard the announcements that 55-year old actress Rita Wilson, who has never been commonly known for her work outside of the film industry, is set to release her debut album, “AM/FM” on May 8, 2012. While definitely being surprising news, I couldn’t help but imagine a woman who has loved singing all her life but never dared to venture into it in any really substantial way just finally saying to herself, “Screw it,” and deciding to go for it with something she really loves. The whole concept adds a little extra joy into my heart. That got me thinking about so many others out there who have made a similar, seemingly sudden shift in their career. The more I thought about it, the  more I really wanted to showcase some of these types of artists. There are a LOT of really brilliant singers out there who first came into prominence as actors – so many, in fact, that it was really difficult to narrow it down to just a few to feature here on the blog. In some cases, it came down to a look that I was really excited about and wanted to recreate, while in some cases it was more about artists who I had fallen in love with in the past and whose music I wanted to showcase. In all cases, though, these are people who were always much more known for their acting abilities who made the move into music later into their careers.

As a side note, my selection of artists to feature in this post also had a lot to do with the fact that so much of what I have done here on the blog, especially the past few weeks, has been very youth-oriented and have been featuring looks that wouldn’t necessarily be considered wearable by your average person. So, in selecting the artists to feature in this post, I decided that I really wanted to feature artists in a wide age range. From 55-year old Rita Wilson, mentioned above, to the youngest of these artists, 26-year old Leighton Meester, I made it a point to feature artists who ranged in age, as well as in styles. I will say that I think every one of the looks featured in this post could be considered wearable, although a couple may not necessarily be “day” looks. I really made it a point to select looks that could actually be worn in day-to-day life. All that having been said, let’s get on to the looks!

RITA WILSON

Rita Wilson, as I mentioned above, is 55 years old. She has appeared in 30 films, as well as producing 5 films. In fact, she is kind of widely known as the driving force behind getting the highest-grossing independent film of all-time, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” distributed and served as a producer on the film. She began her career appearing in an episode of “The Brady Bunch,” which I just found really interesting because I was obsessed with “The Brady Bunch” when I was a kid and have seen every episode. I recall the episode she was in but don’t recall it being her in the episode, playing a love interest of Greg Brady. She also played the role of Roxie Hart on Broadway in the musical “Chicago,” which is one of my favorite characters from a musical. As I mentioned above, Rita is getting ready to release her debut album, “AM/FM,” in just a few weeks and I am personally quite excited to hear it. The album will feature covers of classic from the 60s and 70s. The debut single, “All I Have To Do Is Dream,” is absolutely gorgeous, featuring additional vocals from Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Audioslave fame. Check out the video for this song below.

For Rita Wilson’s look, I made it a point to keep most everything really matte or satin finished – no shimmer or metallic or anything of that nature. The inspiration images came from the promotional shoot for her album and I loved that Rita had a really natural, unpolished type of look. It is somewhat Bohemian but really matte. I also find that matte finishes tend to work well for more mature skin, so it seemed like the perfect direction to take with this look.

GWYNETH PALTROW

Gwyneth Paltrow is probably my second favorite actress, after Rosario Dawson, (who actually could easily have been featured in this post, as well, but doesn’t have near as many musical credits as the artists I decided to feature.) Gwyneth will turn 40 years old this year. She has appeared in 45 films, including “Shakespeare In Love,” which earned her a Best Actress Oscar, and one of my favorite films of all-time, “Country Strong,” which heavily featured her as a singer, as well. In fact, since shooting the film “Country Strong,” Gwyneth seems to have really caught the music bug. She went on to appear in 3 episodes of my favorite television series, “Glee,” and released several singles through the show. She also came very close to signing a pretty major record deal with Atlantic Records, although that plan seems to have unfortunately not come to fruition. Gwyneth also runs a fabulous lifestyle blog site called Goop, as well as having recently released a cookbook, called “My Father’s Daughter: Delicious, Easy Recipes Celebrating Family & Togetherness.” She is also the face of Estee Lauder’s Pleasures perfume. Still, I would absolutely love to see Gwyneth release more music, especially after her brilliant turns on the soundtracks to her films “Duets” and “Country Strong.” One of my favorite tracks she has recorded is her duet with Tim McGraw, who co-starred in “Country Strong,” called “Me and  Tennessee.” Check out a video for the song below.

For Gwyneth Paltrow’s look I decided to recreate the look she wore on the cover of the March 2012 issue of Harper’s Bazaar Magazine. I fell in love with this look because I felt like it really kind of embodied Gwyneth’s style, in general – classy, timeless but with an edge. It is youthful and mature all in one. I feel like Gwyneth’s style is all about class and that is a quality that she exudes and I felt like this look did the same thing.

JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT

Jennifer Love Hewitt is 33-years old and has been working in the entertainment industry for the majority of her life. She has appeared in 32 feature films, been a regular on 8 television series, including huge hits like “Party Of Five” and “The Ghost Whisperer,” as well as her just-premiered new series “The Client List,” which is absolutely brilliant. She has also written a book, called “The Day I Shot Cupid,” as well as authoring a comic book series called “Jennifer Love Hewitt’s Music Box.” Aside from all of that, though, she has released 4 albums, all of which were majorly successful across Asia but didn’t make much impact anywhere else. It is a shame because I actually own and love all 4 of these albums and would love to hear more music from her. I have been a huge fan of hers for as long as I can remember. One of my favorite songs of her career is “Can I Go Now,” from her last album, 2002’s “Barenaked.” Check out the video below.

For Jennifer Love Hewitt’s look, I decided to recreate the look from the promotional images for her new series, “The Client List,” because I thought the look was absolutely gorgeous and did a great job of combining Jennifer’s sort of more natural, bohemian style with her natural “sex kitten” sort of look. I also posted a tutorial for this look for this past week’s Work It Wednesday post, so I am going to share that tutorial here, as well, (don’t worry, there is another non-recycled tutorial coming up, as well!)

SCARLETT JOHANSSON

Scarlett Johansson is only 27-years old and has already appeared in 32 films. She started her career at just 10 years old, appearing in a series of different independent films mainly, including one of my all-time favorite films, “If Lucy Fell” with Sarah Jessica Parker and Eric Schaeffer. Her real breakthrough role, though, was starring opposite Bill Murray in 2003’s “Lost In Translation.” Scarlett also won a Tony Award for her work in the play “A View From the Bridge” on Broadway. She has also appeared in ad campaigns for Calvin Klein, L’oreal, Louis Vuitton and was selected as the face of Dolce & Gabbana in 2009. Having made a major name for herself in all of these arenas, Scarlett also moved into the world of music, first with her 2007 album, “Anywhere I Lay My Head,” a collection of Tom Waits covers, then in 2009 she recorded a collaborative album with singer-songwriter Pete Yorn, called “Break Up.” This album, by the way, blew my freaking mind! I absolutely loved it and listen to it still to this day. My favorite track from this album is definitely the lead single, “Relator.” Check out the video below.

For Scarlett Johansson’s look I decided to recreate the look she wore in the promotional images for the “Break Up” album. I chose this look because it was really her quintessential look at the time that this album was released and I thought it was a really beautiful, pared down sort of look in comparison to how you are used to seeing her on red carpets and such, which was a really great way to represent the beautiful, pared down style and sound of the album.

LEIGHTON MEESTER

Leighton Meester is only 26 years old, making her the youngest person in this group I have gathered here. Leighton is the star of the hit CW series, and one of my personal favorites, “Gossip Girl.” She has appeared in 17 films, including my previously mentioned favorite, “Country Strong,” as well as starring roles in the thriller “The Roommate” and as one of the three leads in the adorable romantic comedy “Monte Carlo.”  She has also been featured in ad campaigns for companies like Sunsillk, Nikon, Herbal Essences, Bulgari, Missoni and was even chosen as the face of Vera Wang’s fragrance Lovestruck. She has also been for the past few years working on beginning a career in music, having only released 2 solo singles, as well as featuring on tracks by Cobra Starship and Stephen Jerzak and 3 songs from the soundtrack to “Country Strong.” One of my favorite songs of hers was her debut solo single, “Somebody To Love,” which features Robin Thicke, and was featured on the soundtrack to the film “Valentine’s Day.” Check out the video below.

For Leighton Meester’s look I decided to feature the look from her April 2012 cover of Marie Claire magazine. I fell in love with this look because it is simple and timeless but also has an edge to it, much like Leighton’s character Blair Waldorf on “Gossip Girl.” I also recorded a brand new tutorial for this look, which you can view below!

Like I mentioned above, there are tons of other actors and actresses that have made the move into music in the past, as I’m sure there will continue to be even more in the future. Like I also mentioned above, the lines between acting and music have merged so much that so many younger performers coming into prominence these days are immediately marketed as both, like Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Miranda Cosgrove, Victoria Justice and all the major teen stars of today. It’s kind of an exciting time in pop culture because of this – the world is now delivering a kind of one stop shop for entertainment, allowing you to get music, television series and films all from one star. I like it a lot! Since there are so many of these crossovers happening here lately, don’t be surprised if you see more on this topic in the near future, (maybe even on Music Monday, hint hint.) In the meantime, though, I wish you all a beautiful weekend and a beautiful life!
