The Only Way Is Glam!

While it is coming a little late this week, it is time for the Friday Feature, and it is definitely a BIG one! It’s big in a lot of different ways and for a lot of different reasons! First of all, there won’t actually be a Friday Feature next week, so there was definitely a need to make this one big enough to last for two weeks. It is also really big because it is featuring what are, in my own personal opinion, some of the very best, most interesting, (and some of my personal favorite,) looks I have ever done. It is also a really big post because these are definitely, without a doubt, some of the biggest looks I have ever done. It’s also a really big post because it is showcasing something that I have become completely obsessed with and come to feel very passionate about over the past few weeks. Lastly, and probably the biggest reason it is such a big post, is because it is the very first time I am doing a Friday Feature that does NOT include music. I know that this kind of goes against the Beausic name but I decided to do this for a couple of reasons, the main one being that I simply couldn’t resist doing this post. You see, it all began the week of my birthday. I took a week of vacation time in order to just get a little break from work and the stress that comes with it without making any actual plans. I knew that I wanted to spend a little extra time that week working on stuff for the blog but it was mainly about relaxation and getting some extra exercise and such. Still, I knew that I could only dedicate so much time to those things without SOMETHING else to focus on. This is where the TV comes into play for me most often, or watching television and films online. I had recently seen a makeup tutorial from Pixiwoo that had me REALLY intrigued about this specific series, so I downloaded the first 3 seasons and watched them all within a couple of days. Then, I downloaded the rest of the series so I could catch up before the 6th series started on Sunday of that week. I just fell completely in love with the series and found myself wondering why I didn’t hear more people talking about it or familiar with it. I mean, it’s a British series, so it’s understandable that people here in the States wouldn’t even be aware of it but it is SUCH a shame because it is absolutely brilliant! You must know by now, if you follow my YouTube videos, this blog, my Facebook, Twitter, etc., what I am talking about: “The Only Way Is Essex.”

“The Only Way Is Essex” is a British “reality” television series focused on a tight knit group of friends and “frienemies” located in Brentwood, a city in the county of Essex in England. Essex is known for many things but one of the biggest things I have heard about over several years are “Essex Girls,” a stereotypical term used throughout much of England for girls who are, well, dumb whores. There are even “Essex Girl” jokes that became quite popular in England during the 1980s and 90s, which are essentially equivalent to dumb blonde jokes here in America. In fact, the Wikipedia page for the term “Essex Girl” states, “The stereotypical image was formed as a variation of the dumb blonde/bimbo persona, with references to the Estuary English accent, white stiletto heels, silicone augmented breasts, peroxide blonde hair, over-indulgent use of fake tan (lending an orange appearance), promiscuity, loud verbal vulgarity and to socialising at downmarket nightclubs.” Essentially, they are frequently seen as tacky, tactless, sluts who lack substance. I have always identified with people who are stereotyped in this way because I feel like I fit into those categories in a lot of ways and I have found that a lot of people don’t necessarily see that there is more to me than these things, either.

“The Only Way Is Essex,” popularly known as TOWIE, follows a group of 20-somethings as they navigate life and their frequently interwoven romantic relationships and interpersonal conflicts. For an American comparison, it is kind of like a combination of the MTV series “The Hills” and “Jersey Shore.” It is more similar to “The Hills” in the sense that it has a very glossy appearance and is, admittedly, at least partially set up. In fact, every episode begins with a disclaimer stating, “The tans may be fake but the people are all real, although some of what they do has been set up purely for your entertainment.” Essentially, they are real people saying unscripted lines but set up in a structured way. Also, it is filmed in the same way that “The Hills” was with each episode being filmed and edited only a few days in advance of it’s airing, which is still quite unprecedented for reality television. It is also like “The Hills” in the sense that everybody is young and beautiful and works either in the fashion or nightlife industries. The only real similarities to “Jersey Shore,” at it’s core, are the facts that every character on the show is really over-the-top, in both appearance and persona, and the fact that they all have a lot of sex, within the central group and with outsiders. The dramas and interwoven relationships are all really interesting and fun to watch but what really pulls you in are the cast of characters they have gathered for this series. Each of these people, I suppose, could be seen as really obnoxious and even annoying but there is something so incredibly endearing about all of them that even the ones that you really find yourself shouting at the screen over are also characters that you absolutely adore. It is also absolutely brilliant how the show has created it’s own little language and catchphrases, which have jumped to the forefront of British slang. Some examples would include “Jel,” which means jealous, “Reem,” which means attractive and the clever catchphrase “No Carbs Before Marbs,” a reference to trying to get fit before vacationing to Marbella. So, I wanted to showcase some of those characters and their individual styles, as well as some of my favorite clips from the show, here for you all and try to show you why I have become so enamored with this show, and why you should be, too!

Before we begin with the looks, though, I also wanted to mention a couple of things about these looks. First of all, they are MAJOR. I have never done makeup the way that I have for this post. It is all so over the top and I used such a huge amount of product for each of these looks that it was downright ridiculous. I absolutely loved it! There are a couple of products that were absolutely necessary in all but one of these looks, too – bronzer and false lashes. Everybody knows by now how much I dislike using false lashes because I am just not very good at them but I actually decided to use this week as an opportunity to try to master the art of applying them. How did I do? See for yourselves – Let’s get to it!

AMY CHILDS

Amy Childs was one of, really, four main characters in the first series of TOWIE. She owned and operated a business in Brentwood, Amy’s Salon, and was most frequently the first character seen in every episode, alongside her cousin Harry Derbridge and friend Sam Faiers, who would go on to become one of the main characters, as well. These three were featured heavily as they were, quite frankly, absolutely hilarious to watch, especially together. All three come across as airheads much of the time and have hilarious conversations about completely random things, including “vajazzling,” (decorating your pubic region with jewels,) a word that Amy is responsible for introducing into the British vocabulary. The first season also put a major focus on Amy’s relationship with Kirk Norcross, owner of Brentwood’s most popular nightclub, Sugar Hut. As the first season focused considerably more on humor, Amy was very heavily featured, however in the second series the focus was shifted much more to the dramas between all of the characters and Amy became much less of a focus and actually wound up leaving the show. She went on to appear on “Celebrity Big Brother,” as well as starring in her own series, “It’s All About Amy,” and getting lots of modelling gigs, even appearing in Vogue. Just this month, rumors have been running rampant across the internet that Amy may actually be making a return to TOWIE, as well, although she has stated that while she is open to the possibility she is actually planning a couple of other series of her own coming up this year.

I also wanted to share a little clip from the show featuring Amy and I knew exactly which event I wanted the clip to come from – the series 2 episode in which Amy, along with Harry, Sam and series 2 newcomers Gemma and Joey Essex, all decide to go “Glamping” – camping, whilst being glamorous. Check it out below!

For my Amy Childs look, I decided to recreate the look that she wore to the UK premiere of the film “Jackass 3D.” In searching through images of Amy online, I kept running across images from this event and really fell in love with her gorgeous, glittery lids and really strongly bronzed skin. I also really loved the effect done on her lip with a red-based lip liner and a much lighter peachy pink in the centers of the lips. Check out my recreation of the look below.

LAUREN GOODGER

Lauren Goodger was one of the other four main characters in the first and second series of TOWIE, due largely to her tumultuous relationship with one of the show’s biggest stars, Mark Wright. In fact, their relationship, whether on or off, (as this status changed quite frequently,) was a central focus of the entire series until the last episode of series 3 when Mark actually left the show. Even since then, Mark and Lauren have continued with some serious off-camera feuding via the media, including an awful incident in which Lauren admitted to a journalist that she had, at one point, aborted Mark’s baby leading him to launch an all out attack on her via Twitter. Lauren has also been widely rumored to be the biggest diva of the TOWIE cast, having actually been suspended from the series for 3 episodes in series 5 due to what is rumored to have been a massive fight with the show’s production. When Lauren returned, however, it was to a much more prominent featuring on the series, thanks in large part to a new relationship with new cast member Tom Pearce. It is also widely rumored that her co-star, and sister to Mark Wright, Jess Wright refuses to film any scenes with her due to conflicts between the two of them.

I also wanted to feature a clip showcasing Lauren’s work on the show and the clip that I found is one that is pretty typical – Lauren fighting with one of her castmates. In this case, the opponent is Lucy Mecklenburgh, who was dating Mark Wright at the time and facing incessant rumors that he was still seeing Lauren. Check out the clip below.

For Lauren Goodger’s look, I searched through numerous images until I could find one that I really loved and felt was really representative of Lauren’s general style. Lauren’s looks tend to be some of the most neutral on the series and almost always put a very strong emphasis on highlighting and including lots of shimmer. Check out my version of the Lauren Goodger look below!

LUCY MECKLENBURGH

One of my very favorite characters on the show is Lucy Mecklenburgh. Lucy was introduced late in series 1 as love interest to Mark Wright during one of his off-again periods with Lauren Goodger. She was introduced as this very sweet girl who was falling victim to a womanizer and eventually coming into her own, leaving Mark after finding out that he had been seeing Lauren behind his back. Series 3, however, saw things take a very different turn for Lucy, with her now in a serious relationship with a new character, the stunningly gorgeous Mario Falcone, and turning the tables by being the one acting shady behind his back. It’s this period that kind of shapes Lucy’s entire run on the series from that point on, as she and Mario kind of become the new Mark & Lauren with their relationship constantly in threat of falling apart. Lucy is one of my favorite characters on the show as she is a girl who has made some mistakes with her life but is willing to admit it and move on from them as best she can, no matter how much others constantly try to take her back to that place, which is something that I can relate to in a lot of ways. I would also say that I think Lucy is one of the most beautiful members of the TOWIE cast.

I wanted to showcase a clip of Lucy from the show, as well, but I definitely wanted to make sure it was one including Mario, as well, because he is just so ridiculously good-looking. So, my mind immediately went to one place – Mario’s first appearance on the series, in the first episode of series 3, the first time you found out that Lucy was now in a relationship after spending most of series 2 being single. Warning: This clip is kinda NSFW. Just the way I like it when it comes to Mario!

For my Lucy Mecklenburgh, I kind of took inspiration from the first image above but really took my inspiration from a look similar to that which I have seen her wear on the show several times. In fact, the only difference between the look from the picture above and the look I did is the fact that I used silver on the inner portion of the lid instead of a more flesh-toned shade. The silver and black version that I did is definitely one she wears much more frequently on the show.

LYDIA BRIGHT

Lydia Bright was introduced onto the show in the last episode of Series 1 as the ex-girlfriend of Mark Wright’s best friend, James Argent, more often referred to as Arg. The main focus of her time on the series has been her back and forth, on again and off again relationship with Arg, which became much more prominently showcased on the series from Series 4 on. One thing that I have always found very interesting on the series is the fact that Lydia’s mother, Debbie, is practically a regular because Lydia lives with throughout the entire series and you see much of Debbie conflicting with, and later supporting, Arg over his relationship with Lydia. Lydia is really an adorable girl, as well, and seemingly much more level-headed and intelligent than the rest of the cast. Still, when it comes to matters of the heart Lydia always seems to be fool as much as any of them, if not more.

One of the reasons that I find Lydia so adorable is her interactions with her mother, so I knew I wanted to include a clip of that. In this clip, Lydia and Debbie are actually cleaning a pig that they own, named Mr. Darcy, and discussing Lydia’s relationship with Arg. Check it out below.

Another thing that I have always loved about Lydia is that she doesn’t entirely conform to the “Essex Girl” persona and actually has a pretty tame look in comparison to the rest of the cast. The look I decided to recreate from Lydia is one that seems to be her signature or one that she wears all the time, featuring a brightly colored lip and very natural, neutral eyes with winged liner, as you can see featured in the picture above. Check out my version of this look below.

GEMMA COLLINS

Probably my other favorite female character on the show, aside from Lucy, would be Gemma Collins. Gemma was introduced into the series at the start of series 2 as a car saleswoman who is selling a car to Kirk Norcross, as well as trying to find the man of her dreams. At that point, Gemma was somebody we had never seen before and was only a supporting character but her role has grown into being one of the main cast members from series 3 on. Throughout the course of the series, we have seen Gemma go through one experience of being unlucky in love after another, including being rejected by Mick Norcross, Kirk’s father, as well as Ricky Rayment, a new character in series 4, as well as carrying on a strange relationship with a new character in series 5, Charlie King, whom she is convinced is gay. Series 5 ended with a special episode in Marbella, in which we saw seeds planted to begin a relationship between Gemma and Arg, which is a fascinating and strange thing.

Since Gemma’s main focus throughout most of the series has been her looking for love, I knew that I wanted to include the clip from Gemma’s first appearance on the series when she is telling Kirk, as she is selling him a car, about what she is looking for in a “dream man.” Check out the clip below.

For my Gemma look, I decided to recreate a look that she wore in series 5 while she was dating Charlie King, which was just a really gorgeous shimmery smokey eye look with really gorgeous bubblegum pink lips and cheeks. In fact, if you saw my post from earlier this week, TheBalm Nude ‘Tude Palette Review & Gemma Collins (The Only Way Is Essex) Tutorial, then you have actually seen this look already! In case you haven’t seen it I have included it here, as well. Check out the video and pics of the look below!

JESS WRIGHT

Jess Wright is sister to series 1, 2 and 3 lead male character Mark Wright. When the series first began Jess’ storylines were primarily focused on her dreams of becoming a pop star within a girl group called LOLA. In Series 1, we saw several performances from LOLA, as well as advancements being made in their career, such as getting representation, selecting singles, etc. Shortly after this, it appears that LOLA broke up and Jess began designing lingerie, opening up her own shop in Brentwood’s High Street area. It wasn’t really until series 5 that you actually saw Jess in a serious relationship with Ricky Rayment. Prior to that the only other involvement you saw between her and another cast member was a kiss shared in the middle of the dance floor between her and Joey Essex, which never actually wound up going anywhere. Still, seeing Jess more prominently featured on the show and actually seeing her deal with all the twists and turns that come with it.

As opposed to doing what I did with the other characters, I have not included a clip from the show but instead included the music video for Jess’s first solo single, “Dance All Night,” which is a song I am becoming more and more fond of every time I play it! Check out the music video below!]

For my Jess Wright look, I decided to recreate a look from her that I absolutely fell in love with as soon as I saw it full-sized. This look features a really gorgeous, neutral smokey eye but with the most beautiful pop of purple underneath the eye and a really neutral pink shade on the cheeks and the lips. I also happened to film a tutorial for this look. Check it out below!

Since TOWIE has such a large cast of characters and so many different, intersecting storylines between them, it was clearly impossible to feature them all here in one post, so it is quite possible there will be a sequel at some point in the future. Still, I hope that this post was enough to help shed a little bit of light on why I have fallen so in love with this series. If you are tech-savvy or have access to British television, I definitely recommend downloading or checking out this show any way you can because, as I have stated so many times, it is absolutely brilliant. It is just the perfect combination of humor and drama and glamour and reality! I absolutely adore it! In any sense, I also just wanted to apologize for this post being so late but I really hope that you guys can come out of it feeling like it was worth the wait! Plus, now it is only one day until we are back with another post! In the meantime, though, I wish you all a beautiful weekend and a beautiful life!
