As Summer Fades, TV Returns!

Summer is quickly fading and, while it is always a little bittersweet to see the Summer go, one of my favorite things about the transition from Summer to Fall is the fact that all of my favorite TV shows come back on the air! As many of you may have noticed by now, I am a little bit of a television junkie. I’m not as bad as a lot of people I have seen but I do love following a good TV series, or what I often do, getting a series on DVD and watching a whole season or two over a lazy weekend. As you also may know by now from Friday Features a couple months ago, my two very favorite shows on television are “Glee” and “Pretty Little Liars,” but there are several other shows on TV that I really love that are returning this season, so I figured it would be fun to feature some looks from them here on the blog! So, I started thinking about shows that I really enjoy and realized that there was something I loved from every major network, which gave me the idea to feature a look from each of these networks, as well!

To provide a little background information or a history lesson, from the early days of television, the 1950s, to the late 1980s, broadcast television was pretty much completely dominated by three major networks, known as the “Big Three,” – ABC, NBC and CBS. They controlled approximately 99% of television ratings until their first feasible and lasting competitor, Fox, was founded in 1986. Fox actually managed to surpass both ABC and NBC and has remained for the majority of it’s years second only to CBS. In 1995 two other major competitors arose, The WB and UPN, both of which focused the majority of their programming on reaching younger audiences, featuring some of the biggest “teen” shows in history, including one of my all-time favorite shows, “Dawson’s Creek.” However, after struggling to gain ratings for several years, these two networks merged to form The CW and have primarily continued their focus on more youth-oriented programming. Each of these networks currently feature at least one of the most popular series on American television today. So, with all of that having been said, let’s get on with the looks!

KALEY CUOCO from THE BIG BANG THEORY (CBS)

“The Big Bang Theory” premiered on September 24, 2007 on CBS to moderate ratings but has grown into the highest rated comedy on television heading into it’s sixth season this year. The show centers on a group of young physicists, (and one aerospace engineer,) who live in Los Angeles and work at CalTech and all of the socially awkward antics they get into in dealing with people of average intelligence from day to day. One of the main persons of average intelligence that they deal with most frequently is an aspiring actress who lives in the same building as two of them, Penny, who is played brilliantly by Kaley Cuoco. Kaley Cuoco began acting at just 7 years old, appearing in a TV movie called “Quicksand: No Escape.” She spent much of her childhood years appearing in TV movies and making appearances in different series, including “My So-Called Life,” “Northern Exposure,” “Ellen” and “7th Heaven,” before landing her first leading role in the series “8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter,” opposite the late John Ritter. She also went on to take a lead role in the final seasons of the hit WB series “Charmed” before being cast on “The Big Bang Theory.” While Kaley has not done any real singing in her career, I figured to keep a little bit of the music in Beausic by featuring a clip of Kaley’s character, Penny, in one of “The Big Bang Theory”‘s most beloved moments, singing “Soft Kitty” to Sheldon, played by Jim Parsons, when he is sick.

For my Kaley Cuoco look, I decided to recreate a very simple look from promo pics for “The Big Bang Theory”‘s fourth or fifth season, which I felt really captured both the actress and the character’s really simple, natural beauty and simply emphasizes key features on her face, like drawing attention to the face by adding the deep brown liner to the upper and lower lash lines, as well as really enhancing her full cheeks by highlighting and applying blush right at the apples of the cheeks, instead of focusing on contouring the hollows of the cheeks.

BLAKE LIVELY from GOSSIP GIRL on CW

“Gossip Girl” premiered on September 19, 2007 on the CW and very quickly became one of the network’s highest rated series, as well as a bit of a cultural phenomenon. The series is heading into it’s sixth and final season in the 2012-13 television season. “Gossip Girl,” based on the book series of the same name by Cecily von Ziegesar, centers on the lives of a group of privileged teens on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and the anonymous gossip blogger, Gossip Girl, who follows and documents all of their biggest secrets and scandals. The series began with the return of notorious “it girl” Serena van der Woodsen to the Upper East Side after a mysterious period away at a boarding school. Serena is that kind of free-spirited, effortless beauty that everybody wishes they could be but also has a very troubled past that continuously haunts her throughout the series. Serena is played, in a touch of perfect casting, by stunning young actress, and one of my personal favorites, Blake Lively. Blake comes from a family of actors, with both of her parents and all four of her siblings being, or having been, in the entertainment industry. She began her career in 2005 with a starring role in one of my all-time favorite films, “The Sisterhood Of The Travelling Pants,” and, outside of “Gossip Girl,” has managed to build a really strong film career for herself. She has also become a staple in the tabloids for her high-profile relationships and has become an international style icon and has recently become the face of the latest fragrance from fashion house Gucci, Gucci Premiere. Below I have included a clip of Blake’s very first scene on “Gossip Girl” and the very first scene of the entire series, when Serena arrives back to New York after having been away at boarding school.

For my Blake Lively look, I decided to recreate a look that she wore in the Summer issue of Bullett Magazine. I chose this look because I felt like it was a very good representation of Blake’s “usual” look, which is all focused on a really gorgeous, sun-kissed skin, neutral bronze or gold tones on the eyes and a nude lip.

EMILY VANCAMP from REVENGE on ABC

“Revenge” was a new series in the 2011-2012 television season, premiering on September 21, 2011 on ABC. “Revenge” focuses on Emily Thorne renting a home in the Hamptons for the Summer right next to the socialite Grayson family. However, it is soon revealed that Emily Thorne is not who she says she is – she is Amanda Clarke, daughter of David Clarke who was framed for a crime he didn’t commit and sentenced to life in prison. David had a very intimate connection to the Grayson family and Amanda, as Emily, has tracked them down to exact revenge for her father’s fate. Emily is played by Emily Vancamp, whose career began with an appearance on Nickelodeon series “Are You Afraid Of The Dark?” She got her big break, though, as the main love interest of the main character on the hit WB series, “Everwood,” opposite Treat Williams and Gregory Smith. She also went on to a starring role on another massive hit series for ABC, “Brothers and Sisters.” “Revenge” has been renewed for a second season, which will begin on September 30, 2012, taking over the timeslot left open by the end of one of the network’s biggest hits and staples, “Desperate Housewives.” Check out a promo for the new season below!

For my “Revenge” look, I recreated a look from the promo images for the first season of the series. I chose this look because I felt like it was kind of a perfect representation of the character of Emily Thorne/Amanda Clarke – the bold red lips that tend to be the symbol of a dangerous girl juxtaposed with the softness of the rest of the look. Emily Vancamp has one of those faces that can’t help but look really sweet and soft but I thought the makeup in these images did a really great job of adding the elements of mystery and danger.

KATHARINE MCPHEE from SMASH on NBC

“Smash” is another new series of the 2011-2012 season, which premiered mid-season on February 6, 2012 on NBC. The series is a musical drama following all of the parties involved in the creation of a new musical for Broadway based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. It is a fascinating dramatization of the entire process of writing, producing, financing, casting and staging a music for Broadway, which you all must know by now is something that I am fascinated with and quite passionate about. One of the central story lines of the series’ first season is the battle for the role of Marilyn between Ivy Lynn, a seasoned stage performer, played by seasoned stage performer Megan Hilty, and a naive young ingenue from Iowa, Karen Cartwright, played by the stunning and talented Katharine McPhee. Katharine McPhee got her start as the runner-up on the fifth season of “American Idol.” Her vocal talent was recognized by famed mega-producer David Foster and began working and recording with him. She has gone on to release three albums and is currently my most listened to artist on Spotify. Katharine also quickly made the move into acting, as well as singing, playing small-ish roles in films like “The House Bunny,” “Shark Night 3D” and “You May Not Kiss The Bride,” but “Smash” is her first lead role on a television series. Below you can check out a clip of her gorgeous cover of “Beautiful” by Christina Aguilera from the series’ pilot episode.

For my “Smash” look, I decided to recreate the look from the promo pics for the first season of “Smash.” I chose this look because Katharine’s character is quite naive but throughout the series grows into her identity and sexuality more and more and develops a considerably harder edge. I felt like this look captured both the youthful naivete of the character, as well as her darker, sexier side all at once. I also really loved the strong emphasis on the cheeks in this look, as well, with very defined cheekbones with a pop of peach at the apples.

ZOOEY DESCHANEL from NEW GIRL on FOX

“New Girl” was my very favorite new series of the 2011-2012 television season and is, in my personal opinion, the funniest series on television at this time. The series premiered on September 20, 2011 on Fox. “New Girl” begins with Elementary School teacher Jess Day discovering that her boyfriend was cheating on her and looking for a new place to live. She eventually finds a room to rent in an apartment with three twenty-something guys who don’t quite know how to handle her quirky, bubbly, overly positive nature. Jess is portrayed by one of my long-time favorite actresses and musicians, Zooey Deschanel. Zooey Deschanel has appeared in over 40 films and television series prior to her starring role in “New Girl,” including some of my very favorite films of all-time, including “Flakes,” “(500) Days of Summer,” “Bridge To Terabithia,” and “Failure To Launch.” She has also released three albums, all of which I have absolutely loved, as half of the indie-folk duo She & Him. For an example of her musical style, one need look no further than the opening credits of “New Girl,” which I have included below.

For my “New Girl” look, I decided to recreate the look from the promo posters for season 2 of the series. I selected this look because it is really the quintessential Zooey Deschanel look. Zooey has a tendency to wear a very specific look, placing a major emphasis on making the eyes appear very large for that doe-eyed or wide-eyed effect, with really full coverage on the skin and some variation on a berry lip. I also decided to film a tutorial for this look, which you can watch below!

Like I mentioned above, these are some of my very favorite returning series of the 2012-2013 television season and I am very excited to see where each of these shows is going to go moving forward. I am also really excited about a few of the new series beginning this year, in particular Mindy Kaling’s “The Mindy Project,” which I am guessing will be quite hilarious. I am also super excited for the return of “Glee” next week! So, while we all wait for that, I wish you all a beautiful weekend and a beautiful life!
