The Beauty Of Reality

As I mentioned in my Music Monday post this past week, while I am a really big fan of scripted television, I am also really fascinated by reality television and couldn’t really stop with just a Music Monday post on it. So, I figured “Why not make it a whole Friday Feature?!” …and here we are. Reality television is essentially television series documenting purportedly unscripted events and typically features average people, as opposed to professional actors. It is like a strange, skewed off-shoot of documentary film-making, except it is typically much more stylized and a lot less “real.” The reality genre had made appearances on television previously, including the long-running 1948 series “Candid Camera,” the brilliant “An American Family” in 1973 and MTV’s “The Real World” and “Road Rules” in the 1990s, but it really gained momentum and became one of televisions primary programming staples starting in 1999-2000 with the popularity of the series “Survivor” and “Big Brother.” Now, television is filled with a very large variety of reality programming. There are documentary style or “fly on the wall” reality series, such as “Miami Ink,” “Nick & Jessica: Newlyweds” or even “Keeping Up With The Kardashians,” and various forms of competition-based reality series, such as the most popular reality series on television today, “American Idol,” as well as “America’s Got Talent,” and even romance-based competitions like “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette.” There are also a ton of reality series based on self-improvement, like “The Biggest Loser,” “What Not To Wear” and “Extreme Makeover,” as well as tons focused on weddings, home improvement and renovations, paranormal activity and even “The Joe Schmo Show” where all but one person in the cast were professional actors and the entire experience was completely faked just to get one guy’s reaction. Reality television has become one of the most successful and popular genres of television today and has made instant celebrities out of an insane number of everyday people.

For this post, I wanted to feature stars from a wide variety of different types of reality television series. As I also mentioned in the Music Monday post, I do feel like reality television has a way of highlighting some of the worst kind of people in this world, or perhaps brings out the worst in many people but regardless of your feelings on these people’s personalities, lifestyles, public behavior or whatever else, I felt like these were all people who have made a major impact on the genre and I definitely have a certain respect for each of them in their own special way. So, with all of that having been said, let’s get on with it!

PAT LOUD from AN AMERICAN FAMILY

Diane Lane as Pat Loud in “Cinema Verite”

It only seems appropriate to begin with the star of the very first reality series, “An American Family.” “An American Family” was filmed from May-December 1971 and aired in 1973 on PBS. The series was meant to document the lives of a typical family in the United States but wound up being one of the most ground-breaking series in television history once the tides turned in the family throughout the series when their son, Lance, came out of the closet during the course of the series, (making him the first openly gay character in television history,) as well as featuring the deterioration of the marriage between Pat and Bill Loud, featuring the first divorce in television history. As I mentioned, it was one of the most ground-breaking series in television history and was the very creation of reality television. It also began the ongoing discussion in the international media questioning the actual reality of reality television, particularly with the entire Loud family making a massive number of media appearances disputing their portrayal in the series. This is all “old hat” in the media to people of my generation but this had never happened before this. In spite of their issues with their portrayal, the family did do two follow-up series, “An American Family 10 Years Later,” and “Lance Loud: A Death in An American Family,” chronicling Lance Loud’s eventually lost battle with HIV. The family also inspired an absolutely brilliant 2011 HBO film “Cinema Verite,” starring Diane Lane as Pat Loud. Below I have included a clip I found on YouTube featuring a random collection of footage from the series.

As appropriate as it seemed to begin this post with the first and one of the most iconic mothers of reality television, it seemed even more appropriate to do that look on the very first “guest model” here on Beausic – my mother! As you may have noticed from the random hilarious moment in my pageant look video from Wednesday this week, my mother happens to be in town visiting this week. So, I definitely wanted to take advantage and do a look on her. I must say, though, that while I used the technique I would have done on myself for this look, it came out MUCH more dramatic looking than I was going for. I am still getting the hang of doing makeup on other people and this look got a little out of control. Still, even though I thought of scrapping it, or saving it for a different post, I just knew I had to share it! Check it out below!

PARIS HILTON from “THE SIMPLE LIFE” and “PARIS HILTON’S MY NEW BFF”

Paris Hilton was a staple in tabloid magazines and throughout the blogosphere since her teenage years, coming from one of the wealthiest families in America and being heiress to the Hilton fortune, however it wasn’t until her first foray into reality television that she became a household name. It was 2003 when her first television series, “The Simple Life,” premiered. The success of the serious was, of course, helped by the release of a sex tape shortly before the show’s premiere. Regardless of what got people to watch initially, though, they kept coming back to see the wild antics of Paris and then best friend Nicole Richie plucked from their luxurious lives in Los Angeles and placed with a family in a small town in Arkansas. The series ran for 5 seasons, through a cancellation from the Fox network and being picked up by the E! Network and Paris and Nicole falling out and refusing to film together, and was a huge success. After “The Simple Life” ended, Paris released an album of really brilliant pop tracks, in my personal opinion, released a book, a successful line of clothing, accessories, fragrances and various other products. Paris returned to reality TV in 2008 with her very own competition series, “Paris Hilton’s My New BFF,” which saw a group of people from across the country competing to become Paris’ best friend and a member of her entourage. This show ran for two seasons, as well as spawning two spin-off series, “Paris Hilton’s British Best Friend” and “Paris Hilton’s Dubai BFF.” Paris would eventually return to reality television again with a documentary style series called “The World According To Paris.” In between all of these major projects, though, Paris has always managed to find the time for some fun, (and legal troubles,) and has managed to poke fun at herself plenty of times, like in one of my favorite moments of her career, a music video for a song called “Paris For President,” which can be seen below.

For my Paris Hilton look, I decided to recreate a look I found online from the premiere for her series, “Paris Hilton’s My New BFF.” I felt like this look was a really great representation of the Paris Hilton look, in general, so it seemed like the perfect look to recreate here. This look features strong contouring, light-ish bronzer, glossy pink lips and a gorgeous bronze smokey eye, all of which can be seen on Paris more often than not!

LAUREN CONRAD from “LAGUNA BEACH” and “THE HILLS”

Lauren Conrad is probably my favorite reality television personality ever. I don’t think there has been a single aspect of her career that I haven’t absolutely loved – and that’s really saying something, because there have been a lot of different aspects of her career! It all began, though, when MTV decided to film a reality series at her high school. Lauren was selected as the central character for the series, which would eventually be titled “Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County.” The series followed Lauren and her group of friends and enemies through her senior year of high school, as well as when she went off to her first year of college, which she left halfway through. Throughout the series Lauren always talked of her aspirations to work in the fashion industry, so MTV took the opportunity to continue with Lauren on a spin-off series, “The Hills,” which would eventually surpass the success of “Laguna Beach.” “The Hills” focused on Lauren’s move to Los Angeles and followed her internship at Teen Vogue and work with famed fashion publicist Kelly Cutrone, a reality staple in her own right. The series focused more, though, on her relationships with her friends Heidi Montag, Audrina Patridge and Whitney Port, as well as her romantic relationships. Eventually, Lauren grew tired of all of this filming and left the show to pursue an actual career in fashion. Lauren eventually launched three successful fashion lines, The Lauren Conrad Collection, LC by Lauren Conrad and Paper Crown. She also became a best-selling author with a young adult book series called “L.A. Candy,” as well as a brilliant style book called “Lauren Conrad Style,” which was featured in my Beauty Bibles post several months ago. Lauren had eventually agreed to do another reality series for MTV strictly focused on her career in the fashion industry without any showcase on her personal life, but MTV rejected the series stating it was too “high brow” for their viewers. It’s a shame, too, because an opening credit for the show that was leaked to the internet was absolutely breathtaking and had me really excited for the series. You can check out that video below. Lauren also has a book coming out in October called “Lauren Conrad Beauty,” which I am very much looking forward to, and even launched her own beauty website, The Beauty Department, filled with fun and informative tips about hair, makeup and general style.

For my Lauren Conrad look, I recreated a look she wore at her cover shoot for the May 2012 issue of Glamour Magazine. I mainly chose this look, though, because it is very much the signature Lauren Conrad look. She even says so herself in her book, “Lauren Conrad Style.” Since Lauren is my very favorite reality television star and has become such an icon for beauty and fashion, it only seemed appropriate to film a tutorial for her look!

JILLIAN MICHAELS from THE BIGGEST LOSER

Jillian Michaels career began as a personal trainer and she eventually built herself into a fitness guru releasing the successful 90-day weight loss program, “Body Revolution.” She made the move into reality television in 2004 as one of two trainers coaching contestants on the reality competition series “The Biggest Loser,” a series that pits a group of obese people against one another with the winner being the person who can lose the highest percentage of weight from where they began. The success of the series also helped raise sales of Jillian’s 15 fitness DVDs, as well as a number of fitness-based videos games for the Wii and Xbox 360 consoles. She also had a spin-off series called “Losing It with Jillian,” which featured her visiting one family per episode and helping them reach their weight loss goals. Jillian has become one of the biggest names in fitness in America. Below I have included a clip I found on YouTube, which is just a random collection of some of Jillian’s best moments on “The Biggest Loser.”

For my Jillian Michaels look I decided to recreate the look from the cover of her Wii video game, “Fitness Ultimatum 2010.” I selected this look because I thought it was absolutely gorgeous and was kind of a perfect look to represent Jillian’s whole persona, as it seems like kind of a perfect “gym” look, using both lightweight and long-wearing products that would easily get you through a trip to the gym looking stunning! Plus, it is kind of a more glammed up version of the look that you see Jillian in most often on “The Biggest Loser.”

RACHEL REILLY from BIG BROTHER, SEASONS 12 and 13

Rachel Reilly has a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from West Carolina University but left her home in North Carolina in favor of living in Las Vegas as a cocktail waitress and model for Hawaiian Tropic prior to being cast on the 12th US season of one of the world’s biggest reality franchises, “Big Brother,” in which 12-14 houseguests are placed in a house and compete to maintain their place and gain power in the house, with one person evicted each week until only two remain, at which point a jury of the previously evicted houseguests vote on which one should win the prize of $500,000. She finished ninth in this season of the series but got a much bigger prize in the form of her now-husband Brendan Villegas, whom she met in the “Big Brother” house. Rachel and Brendan both returned to the “Big Brother” house the following season in a twist which saw houseguests from previous season’s competing against new cast members. In spite of numerous attempts to have her evicted, Rachel went on to win the $500,000 prize. Rachel and Brendan also went on to compete in the 20th season of “The Amazing Race,” as well as appearing on several other reality series, all related to planning their wedding, including “Brides of Beverly Hills” and “Natural Born Sellers,” as well as making a guest appearance in the current 14th season of “Big Brother.” Still, the crowning moment of her career thus far has definitely been her win on “Big Brother 13,” a clip of which can be seen below.

For my Rachel Reilly look, I decided to recreate a look from a photo shoot she did with Philip Alan, a photographer noted for his series of photographs of “Big Brother” contestants. Rachel has always had a very specific makeup look, which is all focused on lengthening the eyes by focusing darker colors on the outer corners and this makeup look really showcases that look beautifully.

NICOLE “SNOOKI” POLIZZI from JERSEY SHORE

“Jersey Shore” is not one of my personal favorite reality series, (I haven’t honestly watched much of it,) and Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi is not one of my favorite television personalities by any means, however you can’t really do a post about reality television without including them. The reason for this is simply that there is no denying that the series and Snooki herself have become a cultural phenomenon. The show is MTV’s highest rate series of all-time and, like most cultural phenomena, has introduced a whole slew of new slang into the American language. It has also been surrounded with controversy, including a backlash from the Italian-American community, as well as the state of New Jersey itself, for it’s negative portrayal of it’s residents, as well as the shows promotion of and incessant use of the terms Guido and Guidette, which are considered racial slurs against Italians. Snooki has been the series breakout star, becoming a staple in tabloids and social media, as well as becoming author of three different novels and spawning her own spin-off series, “Snooki & Jwoww Vs. The World,” alongside her “Jersey Shore” co-star Jenni “Jwoww” Farley. Most recently Snooki has become engaged and given birth to her first child only about 2 weeks ago on August 26, 2012. Below I have included a video featuring some of the most memorable and hilarious quotes of Snooki’s from “Jersey Shore.”

For my Snooki look, I did a Google image search for her and found that she does seem to have a pretty signature look, with heavily bronzed skin, a dark smokey eye and a bright, glossy lip. The particular images I took my inspiration from were promo images for “Jersey Shore” Season 4, although I didn’t actually do a direct recreation of this look and simply did a look that I felt was an accurate representation of Snooki’s look, in general. I also filmed the process! Yes, that’s right, it’s a second tutorial video for this one post! Check it out below!

Like I mentioned above, I have a whole lot of respect for all of these women in their own special ways and feel as though each of them have had some sort of major impact on and have helped to really define the genre that is reality television. I was also really excited to recreate some of these really gorgeous looks from these women! I hope you all found something informative, entertaining and enjoyable in this post! I was also really excited to be able to include a guest appearance from my mother, which is something I hadn’t been able to do before! So, with all of that having been said, I would like to wish you all a beautiful weekend and a beautiful life!
