Buzz Artist: Travis Garland

It’s time again to select a Buzz Artist for the month and, well, for October the choice was ridiculously easy! With an influx of brilliant new material being released over the past several months and a brand new EP being released for free download TODAY, it seemed all too obvious that the Buzz Artist for the month should be the extremely talented and gorgeous singer/songwriter, Travis Garland! For those who don’t know, Travis began his career as a member of a failed boy band but after the group disbanded has managed to scratch and claw his way back into the spotlight in a very big way. You guys may have noticed over the past year at Beausic that I don’t showcase near as many male artists as I do females. There is a reason for this. I have a tendency to relate more to the female perspective in music and, even more, I have a tendency to be much more drawn to the sound of the female voice. There are a number of male artists who I absolutely love and whose voices are among my favorites of all-time, like Darren Hayes, George Michael and Adam Lambert. Add to that list one of my very favorite voices of recent years, Mr. Travis Garland. I first discovered Travis in 2010 when I heard his cover of Beyonce’s “Beautiful Nightmare” and thought it was absolutely brilliant. I started looking into his career more and absolutely fell in love with his voice and his music. So, it seemed like an obvious choice to showcase his music here for you all.

Travis started his career at the young age of 14 when he became a member of the boy band NLT, which stood for “Not Like Them,” alongside JJ Thorne, V Sevani and Kevin McHale, who would go on to play one of the lead roles on my favorite television series of all-time, “Glee.” Travis was clearly the “Justin Timberlake” of NLT, being given the most prominent role in the group and doing a majority of solos on the songs the band did release. In spite of being signed to the record label TUG Entertainment, the group only wound up releasing 3 official singles and never released an album. Much of the group’s material has since leaked to the internet and was actually quite good. I have gathered up a selection of their music below, including their three official music videos. Check it all out below!

“That Girl”

“She Said, I Said (Time We Let Go)”

“Can We Go Back”

“Let Me Know”

“Heart Attack”

“It’s On”

“Silent Night”

“Do It Like I Luv It (featuring Fabo of D4L)”

“Angel (Pharrell Williams cover)”

“I Choose You”

After the disbanding of NLT, Travis shifted his focus to songwriting, creating tons of demos and original material in order to create his own solo album. He began posting these demos to his Myspace page and garnered a lot of attention for them. All of this music had a really strong R&B influenced pop sound and had a really inventive and unique sound that still hasn’t really been recreated to date. So much of this material was so brilliant that it seemed like only a matter of time before he would be discovered by somebody important. Below I have gathered a selection of those demo recordings ranging from 2007 to as recently as 2011.

“Tappin’ Out”

“I Want It All”

“All About You”

“Glow Stick”

“Can’t Wait To Meet Ya”

“Heart Speaks First”

“Your Way Or The Highway”

As I mentioned above, with the strength of the demo recordings he posted on his Myspace page, it was only a matter of time before those recordings were discovered by somebody important. That person was none other than celebrity gossip blogger and at-the-time upstart record label executive, Perez Hilton. Perez signed Travis to his Warner Brothers Records imprint, Perezcious Records, and got an absolutely brilliant first single released, “Believe,” which remains one of my very favorite songs of all-time, (and was featured on the Beausic Original Playlist “M.F.E.O.”) He also managed to book Travis an appearance performing the song live on “American Idol,” which raised his profile considerably. He also hooked up for a few collaborations with pop star Jojo that were really good and helped him gain even more attention. I have included a few different performances of “Believe,” as well as his tracks with Jojo and an MTV feature on Travis below!

“Believe” (Live at American Idol)

MTV’s New Artist To Watch

“Believe” (with PS22 Chorus)

“Believe” (Acoustic)

“Paint” (with Jojo)

“When Does It Go Away” (with Jojo)

“Need You Now” (with Jojo)

In January 2011, Travis released a free mixtape/EP on his official website, called “Last Man Standing,” which had a really unique perspective and a cool “James Bond” or spy theme and showcased a different take on Travis’ unique pop sound. This EP was also the first official release, aside from the “Believe” single from Travis, following a trend of free music releases from some artists who I absolutely adore, like Simon Curtis and Andrea Lewis. Below I have included YouTube videos of each of the 5 tracks on the EP. I will also include the download link for it further below.

“Everything Right Now”

“Last Man Standing (featuring Flash)”

“Too Much (Overkill)”

Most recently, over the past several months, Travis has been posting a number of absolutely brilliant covers of some of the biggest hit songs of today on his YouTube channel. This is something he has done sporadically over the past few years but in recent months has really stepped it up, posting tons of videos labeled “The Shortbus Sessions,” featuring the really amazing covers of songs by Bruno Mars, No Doubt, Beyonce, Taylor Swift and many more. What is so brilliant about these, though, is that he does some really amazing re-workings of these songs, adding his own lyrics and completely changing the arrangements on some of them. My personal favorites are definitely his really fun, chilled out take on No Doubt’s “Settle Down,” and his cover of Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” which sounds like a completely different, really laid back R&B slow jam in comparison to Taylor’s catchy, almost spastic country-pop anthem. Check out all of Travis’ cover tracks below!

“Beautiful Nightmare (Beyonce Cover)”

“Airplanes (B.O.B. Cover)”

“Dead & Gone (T.I. Cover)”

“Brown Sugar Freestyle (Maxwell Cover)”

“F*ckin’ Perfect (Pink Cover)”

“1 + 1 (Beyonce Cover)”

“Slow Dancing In A Burning Room (John Mayer Cover)”

“Climax (Usher Cover)”

“Settle Down (No Doubt Cover)”

“Let Me Love You (Until You Learn To Love Yourself) (Ne-Yo Cover)”

“We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together (Taylor Swift Cover)”

“Locked Out Of Heaven (Bruno Mars Cover)”

As I have mentioned in the past, I have stopped posting downloads here on Beausic but am making an exception in this case because the download I am sharing is 100% official and the download link comes directly from Travis’ official website, which I definitely recommend everybody check out. As mentioned above, Travis is releasing another EP of original music TODAY, called “Fashionably Late,” which I will link to below!

  1. Everything Right Now
  2. Last Man Standing (featuring Flash)
  3. Anybody
  4. Too Much (Overkill)
  5. R.I.P.

  1. Fall In Lust
  2. Abby Lee
  3. Didn’t Stand A Chance
  4. Feel (featuring Three McDaniel)

Like I said above, Travis’ is one of my very favorite voices of recent years and I really can’t wait to hear what else he has in store for us all in the future because not only is his voice amazing but his sound and his fresh, young take on pop music is absolutely brilliant! I really hope you all will check him out because I absolutely adore him and think you guys would, too! I also hope you guys will keep an eye out here on Beausic this week because I have some really cool stuff planned for this week! This Wednesday is time for another in my series of Madonna makeup tutorials and this month just so happens to be one that I think could be perfect for Halloween! The Friday Feature this week is a really big, really exciting one, as well, that I really can’t wait for you all to see! In the meantime, though, I wish you all a beautiful week ahead and a beautiful life!
