Today I’ve got a new album review for you that’s a little “off the beaten path.” I say that it’s an “off the beaten path” review because it’s for an “off the beaten path” album. It’s an album that took me several listens to really get comfortable with due to all of the back story and media coverage of it. I am, of course, talking about the new album, “Paula,” by Robin Thicke. It’s an interesting record, to say the least. Particularly interesting to me, though, was my own initial reaction to it. I generally try to make it a point to “separate the art from the artist,” and not let outside sources affect my feelings toward an art form, however I had a lot of difficulty doing that in this case. That is due in no small part to the fact that this record really seems to delve pretty deeply into the personal life of the artist and details of his recent divorce from actress Paula Patton. I mean, the album is even named after her. The album’s first single, “Get Her Back,” features actual text messages between the two of them, with a backdrop of some pretty disturbing imagery. Check it out for yourself below.
So, with all of that in mind, I went into the album with a predetermined concept that it was creepy, weird and taking things a little too far. Was I right? I think so. However, I had to then take additional listens to it casting these things out of my mind and simply judging it based on the music. I just felt that only then could I do a proper review on it. Check out the results below!
In order for you guys to kind of judge for yourself, I have also included the album as a Spotify playlist below!
In spite of my initial misgivings about the album and much of it’s content, I actually really love this record. I think it is the strongest collection of music Robin has released up to this point, although I think if I were Paula Patton I would be very put off by it. So, in that sense, it may be counterproductive to his cause. Either way, though, it is a pretty great selection of songs. I really enjoy it. I hope you guys enjoyed my thoughts on it and will perhaps give the album a shot yourselves! I also hope you guys will be keeping an eye out here the rest of the week because there is definitely some fun stuff coming up that you won’t want to miss! In the meantime, though, I wish you all a beautiful rest of the week and a beautiful life!
