Teen Stars: All Grown Up

For this week’s Friday Feature, I was a little stumped on what I should do. I have a running list of different Friday Feature ideas that I have been compiling but none of them felt appropriate for this week. Then on Monday, like a bolt of lighting, I was struck when Miley Cyrus world premiered a brand new video for her cover of Bob Dylan’s classic track, “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go.” Her cover of the song, as well as the accompanying video and her look in it, was so classy, gorgeous and surprisingly mature. I have always been a fan of Miley’s music and was just very impressed to see such growth in her. This got me thinking about a lot of my favorite teen pop stars over the past decade or so and how their music and styles have grown over the years. So, I decided this would be a great focus for this week’s Friday Feature.

Now, before moving forward, I did want to address one thing – I am only focusing on teen pop stars who have emerged over the past decade, as this is kind of the primary time that I have had an interest in these types of stars. Sure, just a few years before that we saw the emergence of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson and Mandy Moore, who are all still among my favorite artists of all time. The reason I am not including these artists is that I have either recently featured looks from them, (Jessica Simpson,) or have plans for future posts on them. I also wanted to address one other thing  – you will notice a trend in the stars I have selected; they have all come to fame through Disney. Nobody has produced more teen pop stars over the past decade than Disney and this group are the ones that I have actually listened to and loved during this time.

All that having been said, let’s get on with the post!

DEMI LOVATO

Demi Lovato in the 2007 Disney Channel Original Movie “Camp Rock”

Demi Lovato’s career began when she was just a child, as one of the children stars of “Barney & Friends,” but she re-emerged and really shot to fame as the star of the 2007 Disney Channel Original Movie “Camp Rock.” Since then, Demi has released 3 studio albums, starred in her own Disney Channel series “Sonny With A Chance,” went on 2 very successful headlining tours, as well as a few highly-publicized personal issues and a trip to rehab, (along with a just-this-past-week rumored second trip.) Still, Demi has consistently released really great, fun pop music. As a comeback after the aforementioned trip to rehab, Demi released what is probably her greatest single to date, a track called “Skyscraper,” along with her most mature record to date, “Unbroken.”

The accompanying video for “Skyscraper” also featured Demi’s most mature look to date. Aside from being a gorgeous video, Demi looked absolutely stunning in the video. Her look, in my opinion, embodied a powerful mixture of natural vulnerability and inherent inner strength, which are also the strongest traits of the song and video, as well. These things made it seem like the perfect look to feature in this post.

HILARY DUFF

Hilary Duff in a promotional image for her 2003 album “Metamorphosis.”

Hilary Duff began her career with the 1998 film sequel “Casper Meets Wendy,” but shot to major fame in 2001 as the star of the Disney Channel series “Lizzie McGuire.” She has since released 4 studio albums, has had starring or co-starring roles in 20 feature films, designed a major children’s apparel line “Stuff By Duff,” as well as a design partnership with DKNY, a perfume and released a New York Times Best Selling Young Adult novel, “Elixir.” She has also since gotten married to NHL Hockey Player Mike Comrie and is currently pregnant with her first child.

My very favorite song and video of Hilary’s career has definitely been “Reach Out.” “Reach Out” is the last single that Hilary released, in 2008, and was a new track featured on her last release for Disney’s Hollywood Records, “The Best Of Hilary Duff.” One of my favorite things about Hilary is the fact that she transitioned from child star to young adult to full-fledged grown up in real time. There was never a period where it felt forced or unnatural, or like she was trying too hard to seem like an adult. Because of this natural transition, even when Hilary did something a little more shocking and considerably more sexual than anything else in her career, it wasn’t jarring and didn’t seem inappropriate. By something more shocking and sexual than she had done before, I am definitely talking about “Reach Out.” This is, by far, the most mature thing Hilary has done in her career. Aside from the very sexual nature, this video features some of the most gorgeous imagery of Hilary I have ever seen. It features an array of different high fashion clothes and some of the most gorgeous makeup I have seen in a music video. I could do a full post just on the makeup looks in this video! Still, there was one look in particular that was my absolute favorite – the makeup from the infamous “thumb-sucking” scene.

I loved this look so much, in fact, that I decided to recreate it!

LINDSAY LOHAN

Lindsay Lohan in a promotional picture for the 2003 Feature Film “Freaky Friday”

Lindsay Lohan made her film debut at 12 years old in Disney’s 1998 Feature Film “The Parent Trap,” but really rose to fame in the 2003 film “Freaky Friday.” She then shot to superstardom and became a household name as the star of the groundbreaking, smash hit comedy, (and my favorite film of all-time,) “Mean Girls” in 2004. Lindsay has gone on to release 2 studio albums, has had starring roles in 16 feature films, released a high-end line of leggings called 6126, a line of sunless self-tanning products called Sevin Nyne, has come out as bisexual and has become one of the most notorious Hollywood “bad girls,” known for her several stays in rehab, seemingly endless legal issues and general bad behavior. Lindsay has become one of the major Hollywood masters of really owning and using her bad reputation to her advantage.

The Lindsay look that I have decided to feature comes from a photo shoot she did in 2011 for Blank Magazine, which I felt did a really great job of capturing Lindsay’s “grown up” look. It is dark and edgy, yet sophisticated and classy all with a whole lot of “naughty girl” mixed in. I also wanted to feature a video I found on YouTube featuring my very favorite song of Lindsay’s career, “Bossy.” This video claims to be the official music video for the song but this song never actually had a video, as it was only a buzz single from a planned third album that never actually got released. Also, the video is all actually behind the scenes footage from a gorgeous photo shoot Lindsay did for a different magazine, although this footage works really well with this song and actually looks like it could have been an official video.

MILEY CYRUS

Miley Cyrus’ career began in 2006 with her casting in the dual-lead role on one of Disney Channel’s most successful series of all-time, “Hannah Montana.” Miley has gone on to release 3 studio albums, an EP, has starred in 4 feature films and has gone on 3 massively successful worldwide tours. She has also sparked an insane amount of controversy and become a staple in tabloid magazines. Miley has definitely been more notorious for her image and persona than for her actual work, which I have always thought was a shame because, in my opinion, her work has all been pretty great.

Earlier in the week I recorded a makeup tutorial video, which was posted as my Work It Wednesday post this past week, featuring the look featured in the aforementioned video released Monday for the song “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go.” I am going to include that tutorial here, as well as the video that inspired it. I know that I am essentially just recycling my Wednesday post here and the only reason I decided to do this is because I wanted to include a makeup tutorial but didn’t have the time this week to film the one that I had initially planned, which I will discuss further when I get to the look.

SELENA GOMEZ

Selena Gomez in a promotional image for the first season of the 2007 television series “Wizards Of Waverly Place”

Like Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez began her career as one of the child stars of “Barney & Friends,” but really rose to fame with a guest starring appearance on “Hannah Montana,” quickly followed by a starring role on the Disney Channel series, “Wizards Of Waverly Place.” Selena has gone on to form a band, Selena Gomez & The Scene, who have released 3 studio albums, as well as starring in 9 feature films, releasing her own clothing line called “Dream Out Loud,” launching her own production company called July Moon Productions and is set to release her own fragrance in Spring 2012.

The Selena Gomez look I decided to feature in this post is also the look I had intended to film a tutorial for this week. It is one of the many gorgeous looks featured in her video for her single “Love You Like A Love Song,” from her most recent and, in my opinion, best album “When The Sun Goes Down.” As mentioned before, this video featured several different, really gorgeous makeup looks that take Selena’s style to an entirely different level. The look I am featuring here is kind of the main look featured in the video and one that I actually recreated just for fun when the video was initially released and I thought it was a lot of fun. Still, I suppose it kind of worked out because this particular look was done on YouTube a LOT at the time so it is probably best to hold out for a look that is a little less commonly done. Still, it is an amazing makeup job with gorgeous, bright purple smoky eyes and a really bright coral/orange lip.

ASHLEY TISDALE

Ashley Tisdale from a 2006 photo shoot promoting the first film in the “High School Musical” series

Ashley Tisdale worked as a model and took small roles in films and television throughout most of her childhood, but she got her big break in 2004 when she was cast in a recurring role on the Disney Channel series “The Suite Life Of Zack & Cody.” She really catapulted into fame, though, as Sharpay in the “High School Musical” film series. She has gone on to release 2 studio albums, appeared in 14 major motion pictures and won an MTV Movie Award for Breakthrough Female Performance for her role in “High School Musical 3.” She also appeared in the very popular but, for some reason, cancelled CW television series “Hellcats” in 2010.

The Ashley look I decided to feature in this post is from the promotional shoot for her 2009 album, “Guilty Pleasure.” This look marked a pretty drastic transition in Ashley’s look for two reasons: first, it was one of the earliest debuts of her darker hair, as opposed to the blond she had always had before, and second, because it was also very quickly after she had gone through a rhinoplasty, (nose job,) allegedly due to a deviated septum. Regardless of any of that, Ashley re-emerged with this record with a really fresh, new sound and a really fresh, new look, both of which I absolutely loved. I have also included the video for the first single from “Guilty Pleasure,” called “It’s Alright, It’s OK,” which featured a very similar makeup look and is one of my favorite songs of Ashley’s career.

I also loved this look so much that I decided to recreate this look!

We are nearly a month into the return of the blog and I feel like things are shaping up really well. I am pretty happy with a lot of the new features and am happy that I have developed a bit more of a schedule for different type of features. I also feel like, in a lot of ways, the whole YouTube video thing is coming along well, although there is still a LOT of room for improvement. Still, I do feel like everything about the blog is shaping up nicely and I am certain it will only continue to improve as we move forward into the new month. I’ve nearly got a new Beausic Original Playlist completed for February, as well as plans for several more “Spotlight” posts and continuations on previous features of the blog, as well as some planned new features! All I can really say is this; stick with it, folks! Things are only going to go up from here! In the meantime, I wish you all a beautiful weekend and a beautiful life!
